Fruit tastes best when you’ve picked it yourself. But this is only allowed if you do it in your own orchard. Every year, however, kilos of apples, pears and damsons rot on and under the trees in the meadows and along the country roads. This is wasted food. It could be used to press juice, cook jam or compote, bake and much more.
With the campaign “Gielt Band” that is launched on 29 September 2021, the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, the Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development, together with the Syvicol, is calling on citizens to take action against food waste in an enjoyable and sustainable way.
The municipalities participating in the campaign mark the corresponding fruit trees with a yellow ribbon. Anyone who wants to can then pick fruit from these trees free of charge, for their own use.
If you, as a private person or an association, have an idea for how to reduce food waste, participate in our call for projects. The winners will receive a financial support for their project from the Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development.
