Value food, don’t just throw it away

In Luxembourg, although there is no law requiring supermarkets to redistribute their unsold products to charitable associations instead of disposing of them as there is in France, supermarket chains do so on a voluntary basis by means of several collaborations with organizations such as the Cent Butteker, the “Spëndchen”, the “Stëmm vun der Strooss”, Parc Merveilleux in Bettembourg and even biogas plants.

Directives for Redistribution

As part of the Future Forums, the Ministry of Agriculture organised a conference on 27 October 2016, aimed at distributors, caterers, canteens and producers, to launch a wide-ranging dialogue across the entire production chain on whether or not legislation Is needed. After the conference, and in close dialogue with all the stakeholders, it turned out that, in Luxembourg, there would be no need to legislate because enough was redistributed on a voluntary basis.
